ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

April L . Cotton-Cantrell

Pennsylvanian by birth, traveler by circumstance and calling, and creative photographer by gifting, April L. Cotton-Cantrell speaks the language of soul. Pairing text and image, she draws out ancient truths through a compelling triune experience involving the artist, the subject, and the viewer, all of whom feel the depth of a human story played out in black and white photography.

April's uncanny ability to enter the world of the African children, men, and women she encountered, to gain their trust so they could be transparent, and to capture the meaning of their lives unaffected by her presence came about through her courage, creativity, and commitment to tell the truth. Her aim is to make biblical narratives and principles accessible and personal to people who may not have heard them and if they did, may have considered them for a different time or culture. Each of the photos presents an African face with the same needs and aspirations, a need for a relationship with their Creator, whom they glanced at through the heart and mind of the photographer.

Tabitha

April translates her inward and outward beauty into the images of her subject to show them in their beauty, often framed in poverty or primitivism.  In spite of the differences, her soul language speaks to the commonalities of love and longing.  In a mutual moment of learning from each other, she uses her snapshots to connect to them and their world in a serene evocation of what it means to be human. Her eyes see behind the young child, behind the aged man, or behind the expectant mother to enshrine their lives with timeless truth.

Faith Without Works Is Dead

But as it is written, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love Him." 1 Corinthians 2:9, International Standard Version)
